Rio 2016 Live: Disappointment for India in archery, shooting, badminton

India’s archery campaign at the Rio Olympics came to an end on Friday with Atanu Das losing a tight pre-quarterfinal 6-4 to South Korea’s Lee Seungyun.

There was further disappointment in shooting as well as badminton, with Gagan Narang and Chain Singh failing to make the finals of the men’s 50m rifle prone event, while Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa lost their second group stage doubles match to crash out of the Games.

In women’s shot put, Manpreet Kaur failed to qualify, finishing 13th in her qualification group with a throw of 17.06m. Vikas Gowda failed to qualify in the men’s discus final, finishing 16th in his group.

With athletics events also getting underway at the Games on Friday, it will be a packed day for Indian athletes.

Ankit Sharma in the men’s long jump and Muhammed Anas Yahiya in the men’s 400m first round are among the track and field stars in action.

All eyes will be on Vikas Krishan Yadav in the men’s 75kg round of 16, facing Turkey’s Onder Sipal. After losing their group stage opening games on Thursday, the doubles pairs of Jwala Gutta/Ashwini Ponnappa and Manu Attri/B Sumeeth Reddy have a chance to make amends on Friday.

Krishnan Ganapathi, Gurmeet Singh and Manish Singh are all in the men’s 20km walk final later in the day.

9.50 PM (IST): Rower Dattu Bhokanal finishes 2nd in semifinal C/D 2. He qualifies for final C.

8.40 PM (IST): Vikas Gowda, with throws of 57.59, 58.99 and 58.70, finishes 16th in Group B. Fails to qualify for men’s discus throw final.

7.50 PM (IST): Manpreet Kaur finishes 13th in Group B qualifying for women’s shot put with a throw of 17.06m, thus failing to qualify.

7.30 PM (IST): Gutta/Ponnappa put up a hard fight, but can’t catch up in the third game, lose 16-21, 21-16, 17-21 to Eefje Muskens/Selena Piek of the Netherlands. The Indian pair’s Rio campaign comes to an end.

7.10 PM (IST): Gutta/Ponnappa do well to take the second game 21-16.

7.05 PM (IST): India’s Jinson Johnson finishes with a time of 1 minute, 47.27 seconds to finish fifth in the men’s 800m heats. He got boxed in and tripped twice, and could do little in the final stretch. It’s unlikely he’ll advance.

7.00 PM (IST): At the break, Gutta/Ponnappa lead 12-10.

6.50 PM (IST): Gutta/Ponnappa lose the first game 21-16. Can they stay in this?

6.40 PM (IST): Jwala Gutta/Ashwini Ponnappa’s second doubles match is underway. The Indian pair trail Dutch duo Eefje Muskens/Selena Piek 10-15 in the first game.

6.20 PM (IST): Gagan Narang and Chain Singh are out of the men’s 50m rifle prone event. Narang finished 13th with a total of 623.1 after six series, while Chain Singh finished 36th with a total of 619.6.

6.00 PM (IST): India’s Atanu Das loses to South Korea’s Lee Seungyun in the men’s individual pre-quarterfinals. Das did well to come back to win the second set but Lee took the fourth set and tied third and fifth sets meant that the Korean won 6-4. With Das’ loss, India’s archery campaign comes to an end.
