Steve Rogers Is No Longer Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

With the Marvel Cinematic Universe going strong even after 8 successful years, fans have already picked their favourite superheroes. One of the most iconic comicbook characters of all time, Captain America, has been a huge part of the MCU. Even when he was put against Iron Man in the recent Captain America: Civil War movie, a lot of Cap fans were excited about the prospects of his character development.
At the end of Captain America: Civil War, Steve Rodgers does away with the Captain America shield. Even when he ultimately shows up at the prison to free his allies, he is not in the classic Cap costume.

This particular incident had the rumour mills spinning over the possible meanings of the sequence. In an interview with Huffington Post, the Russo brothers said

"I think him dropping that shield is him letting go of that identity. [It's] him admitting that certainly the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making."

Considering that the Russo brothers are all set to direct the upcoming Avengers: Infinity Wars movie, it's safe to assume that Steve Rodgers will no longer be Captain America.
This happens in the comics as well when Steve just goes with the title of Nomad and the Captain. This new revelation opens a plethora of possible plotlines that might involve the coming together of Earth's mightiest heroes against the huge threat that is Thanos.
